Leeds United has reportedly agreed to a player-plus-cash deal with AFC Wimbledon for goalkeeper Lewis Ward.
The deal, which has now been confirmed by Sky Sports, sees Leeds United acquiring Ward as part of their efforts to strengthen their goalkeeping department. Ward, who has been with AFC Wimbledon since the 2023/24 season, has impressed with his performances in League Two, which caught the attention of several higher-tier clubs.
The deal is structured as a player-plus-cash agreement, with AFC Wimbledon set to receive an undisclosed fee along with a Leeds United player moving in the opposite direction. While the exact details of the player involved haven’t been fully revealed, it’s speculated that a promising youth prospect from Leeds’ academy could be part of the transfer. Leeds United’s decision to invest in Ward is seen as a move to build for the future, given Ward’s solid form and his potential to develop further under the guidance of the club’s coaching staff.
This transfer could benefit both clubs, as AFC Wimbledon will strengthen their squad with the incoming player, while also receiving financial compensation. Ward, on the other hand, gets an opportunity to test himself at a higher level with Leeds United, who are aiming to push for promotion and secure their return to the Premier League after suffering relegation in 2023. Leeds manager Daniel Farke is keen to add depth to the squad, particularly in key positions like goalkeeper, and Ward is expected to provide healthy competition for the current number one at Elland Road.
