The best names in football have nominated Bruno Guimaraes for the 2024 Samba Gold Award.
With Newcastle United, Guimaraes has had a successful start to the season, leading the team to three victories and one tie through four games thus far. This season, the 26-year-old was elevated to the position of “team captain” and assigned to the club’s leadership group.
The Brazilian is a beloved player on Tyneside, and his success at his club has guaranteed his place in the Brazilian national squad. Guimaraes participated in slightly over an hour of Brazil’s World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador. Later this week, when Brazil plays Paraguay, he may square up against fellow Magpie Miguel Almiron.
In addition, he is a nominee for the Samba Gold Award in Brazilian football, which is granted to some of the biggest stars in the league, including Kaka, Neymar, Thiago Silva, Alisson, and the current winner, Vinicius Junior. A combination of public voting and Brazilian journalists cast their votes for the award. Six players from the Premier League are among the 10 nominees. Alongside Lucas Paqueta of West Ham, Joao Gomes of Wolves, Gabrial Martinelli of Arsenal, Andreas Pereira of Fulham, and Savio of Man City are the other nominees for Guimaraes.
The remaining candidates are Rodrygo and holder Vinicius Junior of Real Madrid, Pedro, an attacker for Flamengo, Ederson, a midfielder for Atalanta, and Pedro. With voting ending in 82 days, Guimaraes—who came in second to Neymar for the prize in 2020—might have to wait a bit to find out if he has advanced and taken home the trophy.
