Following surgery, Jamie Miley, a midfielder for Newcastle United, will not be able to play for the foreseeable future.
Miley spent the preseason with Eddie Howe’s first team before joining Newport County of League Two in the last week of the summer transfer window.
After playing in friendlies against SpVgg Unterhaching, Hull City, and Urawa Red Diamonds, the 20-year-old made his senior St. James’ Park debut against Girona, with younger brother Lewis out due to a metatarsal fracture and Sandro Tonali still suspended.
After the 4-0 victory over Girona, Howe remarked, “It’s a lazy comparison, but it was a very Lewy Miley type performance and I mean that as a massive compliment because he was very composed on the ball and very diligent off the ball, I thought he really helped us.”
“Good tactically, which is difficult for someone so young to provide right away. Jamie seems cool and fairly level-headed, as usual. I was thrilled with how he performed, and that will have been a significant event in his career.
Although he made an impression, Newcastle believed that the midfielder would benefit more from a loan move, and Newport stepped up as a result. He played his first 20 minutes of the EFL Trophy against Cheltenham Town last week, losing 2-1 at home, but he hobbled out.
Miley missed Newport’s match against Port Vale a few days later, although manager Nelson Jardim gave an explanation: “He felt some fatigue. As a precaution, we have done a test, but I don’t know the results yet.” He will be evaluated, hopefully with no findings.
Sadly for Jardim and Newport, it seems Miley’s injury was more serious than initially thought. On Thursday night, Miley posted a picture of herself on Instagram from a hospital bed with the statement, “surgery done, back on the mend.”It’s a massive blow for Miley, who was sidelined for most of the previous season due to a knee injury; it’s probable he’ll go back to Tyneside for treatment before starting his loan stint again. It’s presently unknown how serious the injury is and how long it will take to heal.
