Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has given an update on the recuperations of Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman.
Just a few weeks separated the two center backs’ ACL injuries, which rendered them both out. Prior to Lascelles’ subsequent 4-3 comeback victory over West Ham United, Botman last played for the Magpies in the FA Cup quarterfinal loss to Manchester City on March 16.
Howe will have to rely on Fabian Schar, Dan Burn, Lloyd Kelly, and Emil Krafth until they return, which won’t be anytime soon, since United is now lacking in key defensive players.
“Both players have shown a great attitude towards their injuries,” Howe clarified. They have a long road ahead of them. Right now, they’re kind of in the middle of that period.

Both appear to be much happier, and I believe this is normal when an accident initially occurs. You feel a sense of dissatisfaction because you can’t accomplish much and you’re still in the early stages of the operation.
As an athlete, I’ve been there; it’s a trying time. However, you feel so much better about yourself as you begin to accomplish more, get your heart rate up, and begin the physical effort.
“They’re currently in slightly different stages, I’d say Sven’s probably a little bit ahead of Jamaal just in terms of their rehabs, but both players committed to their work and doing great.”
Botman’s 2023–24 career was marred by two major knee injuries after he missed games in September and December of last year due to a partial ACL rupture.
When the Dutchman decided not to have surgery at initially, he was able to resume playing around Christmas time. However, from March onward, Botman didn’t look like himself, which led to an operation.
Paul Mitchell, the sporting director of Newcastle, stated earlier this month that Botman is expected back in December. If Howe is right and he is somewhat ahead of Lascelles, then Lascelles will probably return in the early months of 2025.
