On Wednesday night, Blackburn Rovers will host fellow promotion contenders West Bromwich Albion at Ewood Park for a Championship matchup in an attempt to record their sixth consecutive home win in the second division.
In Lancashire, Rovers defeated Swansea City by a single goal over the weekend, while the Baggies’ dismal play continued as they had to settle for a point against Oxford United.
Blackburn Rovers got back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon after suffering back-to-back away losses to Coventry City and relegation-threatened Plymouth Argyle before the international break. Swansea visited Ewood Park and left South Wales empty-handed.
Tyrhys Dolan, an offensive midfielder, gave Rovers an early lead in the weekend match. The home team then held on admirably to secure a clean sheet against a Swansea team who had about 70% of the possession during the 90 minutes.
Following a fierce victory the previous time out, John Eustace’s team is now six points behind league leaders Sunderland and two points ahead of seventh-place Norwich City, who are now five games undefeated, in the Championship standings after ten games played.
Wednesday’s hosts have started the season with five consecutive home league victories for the first time since the 1994–95 season, when they won the Premier League title under Kenny Dalglish’s leadership. Rovers’ relative success thus far this season has been built on a strong record at Ewood Park.
Blackburn has been depending on a new group of attacking players this season, notably Japanese forward Yuki Ohashi, who has scored four goals in ten Championship outings, since last season’s Golden Boot winner Sammie Szmodics left for Premier League Ipswich Town over the summer.
Due to a cruciate ligament injury, center-back Scott Wharton is projected to be out until the new year, leaving Blackburn without his services.
The absence of Harry Leonard and Zak Gilsenan, who are both recuperating from shoulder and muscular injuries, respectively, limits Rovers’ offensive options.
Daryl Dike, a striker for West Brom, has resumed training with the first squad. The American bagman is hoping to return in November after suffering an Achilles tendon injury.
John Swift and Jed Wallace are seasoned Championship options who might be elevated off the bench if the Baggies decide to make a slight rotation on Wednesday night.
Corberan likely start an unchanged back four, which includes Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley at center back, despite a defensive lapse in the closing minutes at Oxford.
Potential starting lineup for Blackburn Rovers: Travis, Tronstad, Hedges, Dolan, Cantwell; Gueye; Rankin-Costello, Carter, Hyam, Beck; Pears
Possible starting lineup for West Bromwich Albion: Maja; Furlong, Bartley, Ajayi, Heggem; Molumby, Mowatt, Fellows, Swift, Grant; Palmer
