Newcastle United to resurrect £70 million deal with a twist in January, raising concerns for Crystal Palace

The Crystal Palace star was not signed by Newcastle United. Despite multiple offers over the summer, it is said that Newcastle United will try to buy Marc Guehi in January for a reduced price.

In the latter month of the window, Toon chiefs failed to find a breakthrough for the Crystal Palace defender. After his heroics with England in Euro 2024, Eagles chairman Steve Parish claimed that the Magpies must spend “superstar money” to sign the center-back.

While Guehi and Harry Maguire maintained their Three Lions lineup for their 2-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland, Guehi’s performance for Palace has been mediocre ever since the transfer rumors surfaced.

Prior to the 2023–24 season, Guehi, who was appointed captain of Palace, brushed down the commotion when questioned by Sky Sports last month. “I am,” he declared. It is all positive—it feels nice to be back here, to be playing with teammates again, and to have a (pre-season) run-out in front of some of the spectators.

“I am humbled by that (Parish’s remarks); it’s incredible for someone like me that a major player on this football team would say something like that. Although I doubt I am a celebrity, the chairman said some truly kind things.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle will try to negotiate a discount and resurrect the Guehi contract in January. After summer signing Chadi Riad had an injury, Palace reportedly increased their valuation to £75 million.

However, they engaged in a dangerous maneuver because Guehi’s contract is expiring in less than two years. There’s no indication that he will sign an extension, and Newcastle will have greater negotiating leverage the longer they wait.
