Tony Bloom, the owner of Brighton, has disclosed how the Seagulls were able to get Yankuba Minteh this summer by utilizing the PSR deadline.
At the end of June, Newcastle United had to sell Minteh to Brighton in order to abide by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. The Magpies would have lost points if they had broken those.
In the end, they were able to abide with the PSR regulations and stay out of trouble thanks to the sales of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35 million and Minteh to Brighton for £33 million. Newcastle United wasn’t interested in doing either of these deals this summer, but the PSR deadline at the end of June forced their hands.
But Brighton won because Minteh has already proven to be very good in their first few Premier League games, therefore Newcastle lost out. Before joining the Amex Stadium, the 20-year-old played just one game for the Magpies while on loan at Feyenoord.
Speaking to the Athletic, Bloom disclosed that Brighton had been following Minteh for some years and that Newcastle United’s PSR problems allowed them to finalize a deal for the “excellent” winger: “As long as I am chairman, we will always be OK because we always stay inside the bounds. We were well aware of other groups and circumstances. This year, there has been a peculiar circumstance that certain clubs had to sell by June 30, which is the end of the year for most clubs’ accounting. I believe this is an isolated incident.
We had been following Minteh for a while. When he moved to Newcastle a year ago, we were very aware of him [from Odense Boldklub]. His season [at Feyenoord] was fantastic. We were aware of that and the deadline, and we managed to get him in. He’s a fantastic player and a young guy who will hopefully develop better as well. The PSR problems that some clubs were having allowed us to do that by the end of June.
