After 86 games for his nation, the 32-year-old announces his retirement from international football in an emotional video with the tagline “thank you.”

Schar participated in the summer European Championship and went on to represent Switzerland in three European Championships (Euro 2016, 2020, and 2024) and three World Cups (2014, 2018 and 2022).

Schar played his final game for his nation in July during the quarterfinal Euro match against England, a 6-4 loss on penalties. Schar made his debut for his country in August of 2016. Watch the video below for his retirement announcement:

During the international break that begins next month, Schar has eight goals for his nation and is substituted in right before their Nations League matches against Denmark and Spain.

Regarding his Tyneside season thus far, he was suspended for Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth due to his sending off in our opening day victory over Southampton. As a result, he will also miss Sunday’s match against Spurs and Wednesday’s trip to Nottingham Forest.
