The Telegraph reports that Southampton is considering making a late approach for West Ham United attacker Maxwel Cornet.
On its website, the newspaper stated that Russell Martin wants to increase his offensive alternatives before the August 30 deadline.
Since Cornet’s contract at the London Stadium expires in three more years, the Hammers’ only viable alternative is to loan Cornet.
West Ham United ought to approve Maxwel Cornet’s departure.
After initially acquiring Flynn Downes from the Hammers at the beginning of the transfer season, the Saints are hoping to make another inroad into Julen Lopetegeui’s squad.
Attacking potential is currently abundant on Lopetegui’s team. It was one of the weakest sections of the field the previous season, but they appear to be in fine form now that they have recruited heavily throughout the summer.
The addition of players such as Brazilian sensation Luis Guilherme and Player of the Season winner Crysencio Summerville [talkSPORT, August 5, 12:26] to the Hammers has pushed Cornet farther down the standings.
Cornet will probably not receive much playing time this season, so it makes sense to loan him away, especially because Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus will both be staying at the London Stadium for the foreseeable future.
Additionally, if the loan arrangement is successful and Kudus or Bowen decides to leave the team in the upcoming season, Cornet might be a ready-made substitute who wouldn’t cost the team any money, giving them more money to make improvements elsewhere.
In other West Ham news, Richard Rios is the target of a £16.6 million deal from the Hammers.
