Nottingham Forest transfer completed after Nuno praise for player

Latest Nottingham Forest transfer news as Reds continue to shape Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad in summer window

Defender Joe Worrall has completed a move from Nottingham Forest to Burnley on a permanent transfer.

It marks the end of an era for the Nigel Doughty Academy graduate at his boyhood club as he links up with the Championship side. He departs having made 226 appearances for the Reds and having been a key part of the 2022 promotion-winning side.

Worrall last featured in the Garibaldi back in January, when he was a substitute against Blackpool in the FA Cup. He was not part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans after the Portuguese took charge at the City Ground last December and spent the second half of last season on loan at Besiktas.

The centre-back did play for Forest in pre-season this summer but was always expected to move on as the club concentrated on trimming numbers. Nevertheless, Nuno has praised Worrall for his attitude amid the uncertainty about his future.

Speaking before the 27-year-old’s switch was confirmed, the Reds head coach said in his press conference on Thursday lunchtime: “I think you know already how much I appreciate Joe. Since we arrived, we made the decision that he was not to be involved but his behaviour as club captain has been amazing.

“He did all the pre-season. I recall the game when he had a knock in the warm-up but he still played for us and helped us build what we want to build.

“I wish Joe all the best. He is a top guy.

“We didn’t have too much time working together because he moved to Turkey in the winter window. He is a fantastic guy and a good player. He always gives 100 percent in every situation. But we have to make decisions. I hope Joe proceeds his career and is happy, that is what is most important.”
