Premier League. Matt O’Riley, a midfielder for Celtic who has been a standout player for Brendan Rodgers’ team since joining from MK Dons for approximately £1.5 million in 2022, has made 122 appearances overall, scoring 27 goals and dishing out 35 assists.O’Riley has a deal with the Glasgow giants through 2027, but he is also reportedly a target for the recently promoted Southampton, Atletico Madrid of La Liga, and Atalanta of Serie A. The Hoops allegedly turned down Atalanta’s offer of £15 million plus add-ons for O’Riley last week.Matt O’Riley of Celtic has been linked to Brighton, Southampton, and Atalanta. The 23-year-old former England youth international is thought to be worth approximately £25 million. If Brighton were to make this major investment, it would be their second largest to date this window after spending nearly £100 million. However, Brighton may want to bolster their midfield, particularly because Jakub Moder, a Polish international midfielder, is scheduled to depart this season and Pascal Gross, who left for Borussia Dortmund last month for almost £6 million, left for Brighton.
In addition, the Seagulls are up against it to hold onto Billy Gilmour, as Napoli is still after the former midfielder for Chelsea and Rangers. Brighton would still be inclined to pursue O’Riley even after acquiring Mats Wieffer from Feyenoord for £25 million. They might have an edge over other suitors because of Moder or Facundo Buonanotte.Rodgers is reportedly particularly interested in Albion’s dynamic Argentina playmaker, who may not have many opportunity to feature for the first team at the Amex Stadium this season. The 19-year-old has also recently been linked to Feyenoord, Leicester, and Southampton, but at this point, it could make sense for both teams to trade for Buonanotte or Moder and O’Riley.
With a contract that runs until June 2027, Buonanotte will remain with the Seagulls for about £15 million. He made 27 appearances last season with three goals and one assist, but under new head coach Fabian Hurzeler, his playing time at Brighton is probably going to be limited this season due to players returning from injury as well as new summer additions. The situation with O’Riley may change things; much depends on how serious Albion is in O’Riley. Buonanotte, who joined Brighton in 2022 for around £6 million from Rosario Central, has looked sharp in pre-season and is still highly regarded by everyone at Brighton. Rodgers, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “It’s been actually straight forward with Matt because he’s such a great professional. What’s important for me is that if a player does leave here they pay the value for the player and that isn’t something that happens often.”
