Spurs sign David Duke Jr. to a two-way contract

San Antonio has one two-way contract left to offer after the deal.

Despite doing most of their work early in the offseason, the San Antonio Spurs still have some roster spots to fill as we head into August. On Friday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Spurs signed David Duke Jr. to a two-way contract.

Duke Jr. appeared in just 4 games for San Antonio in which he averaged 6.5 points and hit 50% of his threes. He spent most of his time with the Austin Spurs (34 games) averaging 19.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 37.7% from three. He has played 49 games for the Spurs and Brooklyn Nets in his career. The Spurs tendered Duke Jr.’s contract earlier this offseason and now retain him on a two-way contract.

Duke Jr. joins Jamaree Bouyea as two of the three Spurs’ two-way players this season. While Duke Jr. was sidelined for the Summer League, Bouyea shined in a lead guard role. This leaves the Spurs with just one open two-way contract. San Antonio has yet to sign second-round pick, Harrison Ingram to a contract, so he is likely to fill the last two-way contract. That leaves training-camp invitee, Riley Minix on the outside looking in. It also makes it seem increasingly unlikely that former two-way player, Dominick Barlow, will return next season.

Bouyea and Duke Jr. provide the Spurs with some needed depth at the wing and guard position. Duke Jr. should provide them with 3&D insurance in case the injury bug strikes next season.
