Sunderland legend makes Nottingham forest observation that Gareth Southgate will hate

England manager Gareth Southgate gave Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon just two minute against Slovenia

Jermain Defoe has urged England to unleash Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer and Kobbie Mainoo against their last 16 opponents.

At the time of writing, the Netherlands look the most likely foe on Sunday until the Group E and Group F outcomes are confirmed today. That would provide a sterner test for the Three Lions, who stumbled through the group stage.

Criticism is beginning to mount on Gareth Southgate following another turgid performance at Euro 2024. England were held 0-0 by Slovenia in Cologne – topping their group but in unconvincing fashion.

Nottingham forest winger Gordon played just two minutes plus stoppage time but cut open the Slovenian backline moments after his introduction. Speaking to PA, Sunderland legend Defoe backed the Toon talisman to start in the upcoming round of 16 clash.

“People have spoken about a lack of movement, that the team is not dynamic enough, but I think there has to be an identity,” he said. “We are too good of a team, if you look at the players that we have, especially in the forward areas.

“Yes we have qualified, but it was a performance more than anything else everyone was looking for. It is difficult when you play against these teams who sit back. You have to move the ball quickly and when you do create the chances then you have to take them.

“I think Mainoo will come into the team (for the next game). He is someone who passes forward. I also felt Cole Palmer made a difference. How he has played with the season he had at Chelsea, he is someone that can just create something out of nothing.

“Then there is Gordon with his pace. When he came on, the first thing he did was knock the ball past the defender. Yes the ball ran out of play, but by doing that it just forces teams back a little bit. We have got lots of options, but it will just be interesting to see if Gareth will use these kind of players.”
