Following a season of ups and downs, Newcastle United’s summer transfer business has come into sharp focus in recent weeks.

Head coach Eddie Howe would undoubtedly want to make sure he has enough depth in his team to go after a campaign on at least three fronts—possibly even four, depending on European qualification.

This season, injuries have severely limited Howe’s United’s options, and Newcastle has not only been involved in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, but is also making its first Champions League appearance in 20 years. So, in addition to quality, Howe may find that quantity in important roles is as important. And as a result, there have been rumors in the media that the Magpies would try to sign one of the best players in the Championship. This season, Leif Davis has become a standout left-back in the second division. After being promoted to Ipswich Town the previous season, he’s adapted to Championship football like a duck to water, racking up 15 assists as the Tractor Boys battle it out with the Premier League teams that were demoted the previous season for one of three spots back to the top division.

Tuesday night’s 3-2 victory over Bristol City was largely due to Davis, who scored the game’s winning goal in the 89th minute to keep Kieran McKenna’s team in the running for automatic promotion.

It’s widely reported, but Davis is a Geordie in addition to being a former Premier League player with Leeds United. Before making his breakthrough with Morecambe, the defender had graduated from Wallsend Boys Club.

Another Geordie, Tom Allan, who is currently a Gateshead resident and was once a forward for Newcastle United, is certain that his old team ought to try to recruit Davis.
