King’s Lynn boss steps up his search for new players ahead of Chester visit in National League North

Adam Lakeland says King’s Lynn Town need more new faces if they are to avoid relegation from the National League North – but knows that time is against him.

The Linnets were taught a National League North lesson by a Curzon Ashton side that Lakeland built on Tuesday night as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat at the Walks.

They are without a win in six and are two points adrift in the bottom four having played more games than the teams above them.

Lynn have to arrest their slump in form – starting at home to Chester on Saturday – if they are to avoid slipping into even deeper trouble.

King’s Lynn Town boss Lakeland faces old club Curzon Ashton

It’s a case of ‘feed the goat and he will score’ as striker Jonny Margetts prepares for his home bow in King’s Lynn Town colours on Tuesday night.

Margetts arrived at Lynn on Friday, complete with an impressive scoring record that had seen him hit the back of the net 28 times in 28 games for Matlock Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Lynn boss Adam Lakeland gave him his debut in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Hereford – a game when Lynn were on the ropes in the first half but battled back from a two-goal deficit to gain a valuable National League North point.

Lakeland knows it takes two to tango, and that Lynn need to get the supply line working – unlike Saturday.

“I thought Jonny just fed off scraps all afternoon, we didn’t really create a chance for him,” said Lakeland, who will be facing the club he left, Curzon Ashton, to take over at The Walks in October.

“But he absolutely worked his socks off and showed that little bit of nous and experience to win us a few fouls when the call came in to him just to help us get up the pitch, retained it a few times when it came into him.

“We’ve got to find a way of obviously creating opportunities for him because I know if we do that he will score. But I thought his work rate in a game that was probably very frustrating for strikers to play in was tremendous.”

Fellow new recruit Quevin Castro made an appearance off the bench.

“Obviously, Castro came on when the game was a little bit more open and showed his presence and a little bit of quality on the ball at times and his athleticism.

“A difficult game for both for them to come in and make their debuts in, but I’m sure that they’ll both be important for us going forward.”

Central defender Kyle Callan-McFadden went off after just 35minuets at Hereford with a facial injury but could return against Curzon.

“It’s not as bad as we first thought,” said Lakeland. “He’s been assessed by the doctor and they don’t think there’s any break there. We were concerned initially about his jaw, but that all seems to be fine so hopefully it’s just soft tissue. He seems okay and knowing Macca he will be wanting to play on Tuesday.”
