Lewis O’Brien has confirmed on social media that he has had successful surgery on an ankle injury sustained while on loan with Middlesbrough earlier this month. The 26-year-old joined the Teesside side on a one-month loan after leaving DC United.

Last week, Boro boss Michael Carrick revealed that O’Brien had been scheduled to meet with specialists and surgeons to discuss the injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for a number of months.

O’Brien revealed on social media that the surgery had been successful and that he is expected to be back in action in the near future.

Meanwhile, here are the latest Nottingham Forest player ratings for the U21s, with Powell and Perry scoring as they beat Carlisle.

O’Brien took to social media to announce the news, writing: “Surgery completed. Thank you to the incredible medical team and everyone for your kind words and support. Looking forward to recovery and getting back stronger. #MiddlesbroughFC.” Carrick added that O’Brien would be out for two to three months due to his injury.

O’Brien joined the Forest in summer 2022, having previously spent two years with the Terriers. He failed to make an impact as the club flirted with the top-tier.

He was close to a loan move to Blackburn in January, before the deal fell by the wayside. He then joined DC United in March, with Wayne Rooney in charge at the time.

In the summer, O’Brien rejoined the club on a one-year contract, but left on deadline day to join Middlesbrough.

He made five Championship starts for the club, with his latest two games coming as a left-back in the wake of injuries in the club’s loan-based set-up.

Lewis is expected to be out for up to three months, as he recovers from a broken tibia and ankle sustained in a turf-related incident. He will be seen by a surgeon at the beginning of next week, and it is hoped that he will be able to return with us to rehab and recover as quickly as possible. “I’m really disappointed for Lewis, he’s a great lad and character and I’m sure he’ll do everything he can to get back to full fitness as soon as possible,” he said. “It’s unfortunate, but football is the way it is and Lewis will do his best to make up for it and we need to move on quickly.”
