Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to renew their efforts to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba in January.

Due to the unavailability of quality or proficient players, spurs are trying to “make hay while the sun shines”.

Having appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach in the summer, Spurs have enjoyed one of their best starts to the Premier League in recent memory.

The North Londoners have put together a seven-game unbeaten streak, collecting 17 points from a possible 21 to sit in second position in the standings.

However, in the final days of the transfer window there was a sense that Spurs had missed out on some of their best players because they had not been able to offload unwanted players.

The need to strengthen the middle of the park was felt to be urgent, and Micky Van de Ven and young striker Ashley Phillips were brought into the first team.

Nevertheless, the likes of Eric Dier remained, the long-serving Englishman effectively now viewed as fifth choice by Postecoglou but failing to find a new club.

As it stands, Spurs will attempt to resolve the situation in January, Dier in the final year of his contract and chairman Daniel Levy expected to be more open to negotiating a cut-price fee.

According to Fichajes, Tapsoba remains Postecoglou’s number-one target to add further depth to his options in central defence.

The 24-year-old was an option for Spurs and other top European clubs, such as Manchester United, during the summer, only for him to remain at Xabi Alonso’s resurgent Leverkusen.

Tapsoba started all six Bundesliga games this season and was the only player on the pitch for every minute of the team’s run to the top of the table.

Despite Tapsoba signing a new deal until 2028 last month, Spurs are considered to be at a disadvantage in terms of getting a deal done.

However, it has been reported that Spurs are considering making a fresh offer in an effort to bolster their chances of getting back into the Champions League for the 2024-25 season.

No potential value has been mentioned, but Leverkusen would likely demand much more than Tapsoba’s asking price at the halfway point of the season, especially if they remain in the hunt to break Bayern Munich’s stranglehold on Germany.
