Sheffield Wednesday have signed young attacker, Joel Akpobi, according to his former academy, XYZ.

The Star first reported on Akpobi’s presence at Middlewood Road back in August, with the former Welling United man having spent months trying to impress the youth staff in S6. Now it appears that he’s done enough, with it being announced by XYZ Academy on their social media account that he had penned a two-year contract at the club.
“Joel Akpobi signs two-year deal at Sheffield Wednesday,” they said. “Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of exciting young attacker Joel Akpobi, who has agreed a two-year deal with the Owls following a successful trial period. Akpobi made his XYZ Academy debut during the 2023/24 season, featuring across a demanding programme of showcase fixtures designed to expose players to elite-level opposition and key decision-makers.
“Blessed with explosive pace, sharp acceleration and outstanding balance, Akpobi is known for his direct dribbling, flair and ability to hurt teams in transition. Comfortable receiving on the turn and attacking space at speed, he possesses a modern attacking profile well-suited to the professional game.

“Those qualities were on display in the recent FA Youth Cup, where Akpobi found the net against Bromley in a tightly contested third-round tie that went to extra time, underlining his ability to perform on a national stage. This move represents a significant step forward for a player with genuine potential, and another example of XYZ Academy’s proven ability to bridge the gap between grassroots football and the professional academy system.”
Meanwhile, the player himself said on his own Instagram page, “I’m grateful sign a contract with Sheffield Wednesday. Thank you lord.”
The news is yet to be confirmed by the Owls themselves, who have had problems recruiting young players due to their EFL restrictions, and the hope now is that there can be further movement in terms of incomings at the club.
