West Ham could now sign two free agents in the same week as stunning new claim emerges
West Ham United head coach Julen Lopetegui is said to be on the hunt for a couple of free transfers right now.
Julen Lopetegui strengthened his West Ham squad beyond all recognition in the summer, and he has taken us to a new level entirely now in my opinion.
The West Ham head coach enjoyed a magnificent summer transfer window, with nine exceptional new players arriving at the London Stadium.
Lopetegui now has a lot of work to do during the two-week international break, and it will be crucial for him to find a way of getting all of his new signings to gel together.
I have no doubts that everything will come good over the next few months, once the players settle into Lopetegui’s system and get used to one another’s playing styles.
We have players at the club who are genuinely capable of pushing for a top six finish in my eyes.
However, the Hammers chief clearly still thinks his squad in general needs to be improved…
West Ham could now sign two free agents
So it seems like there are no limits to Lopetegui’s desire to bolster his ranks.
Despite leaving himself short defensively after the summer transfer window closed, the Spaniard seems intent on making up for that.
And now it has been claimed that there could be moves in the pipeline for TWO players!
According to a report from Give Me Sport, John Egan is still under consideration at the London Stadium, in spite of the fact that West Ham have already offered Joel Matip a two-year contract.
31-year-old free agent John Egan is said to be ‘being looked at’ by the Hammers right now, after his release from Sheffield United.
Meanwhile, Joel Matip has apparently been offered a two-year deal by West Ham, following his exit from Liverpool after an eight-year stint at Anfield.
And incredibly, it won’t just be a case of one or the other it seems.
Joel Matip and John Egan two potential incomings at West Ham
I think it will be important for Lopetegui to sign one or the other – we don’t actually need two ageing central defenders in my opinion.
The Spaniard certainly needs to bring in more cover for Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos.
However, signing both Matip and Egan would be overkill in my opinion.
The Cameroon and Ireland internationals are both vastly experienced and are undoubtedly capable of being the fourth choice centre-back at the London Stadium for a season or two.
Matip’s injury problems are a concern, whilst Egan has only recently recovered after seriously injuring his Achilles.
The thing is, a fourth choice centre-back doesn’t need to be a world beater. You need someone with experience who is happy to play the backup role or a young academy prospect to provide cover.
Lopetegui has clearly decided to go down the experienced route, with the West Ham boss eyeing up two free agents.
And it’s been sensationally claimed that he could sign both of them.
