Max Thompson has joined Chesterfield, according to confirmation from Newcastle United.

Thompson impressed at Sixfields Stadium during his second half of the previous season while on loan at Northampton Town, recording five clean sheets in 15 League One games. The 20-year-old, who was included in a couple of Eddie Howe’s matchday squads during the last campaign, went to Bournemouth this past weekend to fill in behind Nick Pope and John Ruddy as the third option.

Due to UEFA’s registration regulations for the Champions League, Thompson and Aidan Harris were frequently benched for the first team’s European matches during their campaign in that competition last year. He now has the opportunity to shine with Chesterfield in the EFL.

After winning promotion from the Vanarama National League the previous year, the Spireites have started life in League Two with a strong record, having won one and drawn two of their first three games. Thompson might make his Priestfield debut this weekend when Chesterfield takes on Gillingham.

Prior to moving to Chesterfield, Thompson’s final game for the Magpies was a Premier League 2 tie against Sunderland. In that match, Newcastle had the early advantage, but the Black Cats rallied to share a draw.

In the meanwhile, Newcastle United still has Martin Dubravka, Mark Gillespie, Odysseas Vlachodimos, Ruddy, Pope, and Mark Gillespie as their senior goalkeepers. Although early this summer he was linked to a move away from Tyneside, Dubravka is still a Magpies player.

Though he only recently joined the team from Nottingham Forest, Vlachodimos has been linked to departing before the deadline on Friday.
